so.. i get this new client a few weeks ago who is on a “web kick” thinking their website idea will change the world as we know it (yeah… im not skeptical, i know that a great idea can really change things, but these ideas are tired). so, this photographer is starting up his new studio and comes to me with this grand idea on a website. i sit and listen to everything he proposes. he launches into this grand proposal like he had rehearsed it the night before about how “in tune” with the web he is… how he considers himself an internet pioneer (honestly, i had a hard time keeping a straight face on that one) and created some of the very first sites on the web, and how he “knows how to do all this stuff, but i just dont have time cause im so busy” (which i found exxxxxxtremely hard to believe, but ok.

the basics of it are:

1. has a client login section so people he does photo shoots can login.

2. once logged in, they can view all of the photos from the shoot. they can select different photos and purchase them through the site which will generate a print order for any variety of crap… photos, calendars, posters, etc etc etc.

3. they can track the progress of their order online.

4. his management section will be able to create the new clients and their mini-sites on the fly, as well as setup the galleries for those clients, upload, resize on the fly, color correct, etc.

there is a lot more to it than that, but you get the basic idea.

so… i told him, it sound like he wants to recreate shutterfly. he said no… it will be better (how, im not sure… but ok). so i listen to him explain it all over again… yep, still shutterfly (or smugmug or printroom or millerslab or any other of the countless photography shops setup already).

i finally just bite my tongue… “yeah, oooooh… itll be great. so unique. youre truly a visionary.” meh.

so he wants to put a pricetag on it. jobs of this size i prefer to have broken down for my guys into segments and milestones, and price those milestones… but he wanted the entire shooting match in one swoop. so i told him i would get back to him.

this week, i finally sit down, discuss everything in detail… go over it point by point to make sure the feature list is exactly what he wants. “yeah… perfect.” good.

quote total: $72k – turn around: 6 months, additional 6 months of beta. (which is actually a pretty decent price for the astronomical workload)

he promptly shits a brick.

“company xyz can do it for $1,800″

now… im no stranger to negotiations. in fact, they are kind of my specialty. but there are a few numbers you can throw out… a lowball to let me know you want to haggle… a reeeeaally low number to let me know you are somewhat serious, but really need to find a way to trim… a number to low to even consider… or a number that is actually offensive. his number.. was well below even that.

so i immediately realize im wasting my time, and decide im going to just play along and see where it goes. i break into laughter. not chuckles… not ha ha ha… a full blown gut wrenching laugh where im about to piss myself.

and, just as promptly, his face turns red from rage.

“hey… if you dont want the job, thats fine… but i really wanted to use you. ive heard from (some friend who weve done work for that i cant even remember) that you guys are really good… but you arent even on the same continent as the other companies that have quoted this”

ok. ill bite.

“well… either:

1) you think we’re desperate, which is understandable right now with the economy, but trust me when i tell you… i dont need the work. ive got more than enough and my guys barely have time to sleep as it is right now. i have jobs lined til the end of the year, and 50 proposals working that are worth more than your home. each. in fact, your start date if i gave you the opportunity, will be in feb.

2) you are trying to use that number to “start negotiations”, in which case, let me tell you that ive already rescinded my proposal as we just dont need it, and youre wasting my time. id knock off $500 maybe if you sweet talked me… but thats it. not a penny lower.

3) you didnt explain HALF of what you told me to the other companies you received quotes from. in fact, id be willing to bet, they dont even think its more than a simple one page site. i might create you a template for $1800, but thats about as far as that would go.

4) you are an idiot… and i honestly think this is the case… they are selling you something ENTIRELY different from what you are asking for and you are just too stupid to know the difference. if i was a betting man, id bet its this one.”

he listened, but i could see he was getting more and more pissed off.

“im going to show you just how wrong you are asshole. maybe that will give you a little perspective, and show you that you are your mothers fucking company really arent all you think you are”

at this point, im just having fun with this. ive already written it off… and even if he wrote me a check on the spot for the full 70+k… i wouldnt take it.

i sit there as the dumbshit proceeds to call his rep that gave him this super awesome proposal. he puts the call on speaker phone so i can sit and listen.

“hey mo (which i think is short for muhammad, but thats beside the point)… ive got a friend here in my office with me and we were going over your proposal (which he now hands to me to read – and i immediately see that this is going to provide some amusement for me). what was the price again?”

“umm… let me check…….. here it is… one thousand eight hundred”

so i keep listening and waiting….

“right. thats what i remember. so tell me mo… what exactly are you doing for that? remember when we talked, i had told you about the user login and sales on the site?”

“yes sir. essentially we will create a top quality search engine optimized layout that will help you reach number one on the search engines and get you the best return on your dollars”.

(mo just crammed as many buzz words into a single sentence as he could)i cant help it.. im starting to laugh again.

“right mo… and the user panel and admin panel… the sales end?”

“yes sir, we can build a template for your shopping cart too! but i havent figured that into the proposal. we recommend os commerce.”

at this point, its taking everything i have to keep from laughing uncontrollably. i can see his face is showing signs of confusion. so… i butt in….

“mo… will you explain to him what a template is”…

so mo tells him, and now its all starting to make sense. i can see the light bulb go on over his enormous fat head as the thoughts that maybe hes a fucking idiot come washing over him.

“umm… ok. thanks mo. talk to you later”

i guess i dont need to say i told you so, do i?

he sat there… dreams crushed. he honestly though he could build a full fledged functioning site that replicates what teams of people have taken years to create, for less than the cost of the cheapest pile of shit car you can find.

end result: he scrapped it all. he asked if i could do some sort of payment plan, to which i responded with more laughter while closing the door behind me.

idiot.

yet… the swat team targeted him for a raid after seeing him purchase 2 joints from a dealer. they stormed into his home in the middle of the night… shot both dogs in front of the wife and son (one dog was caged in the kitchen)… and are about to have his kid put into foster care because they deemed the parents were endangering their children. all of this…. over a single joint.

he was a happy grad and participating alumn, happily paying his alumni dues and keeping up with the school. for some reason this year, he did not receive his yearly alumni packet as he had for the last decade. so… he inquired as to why….

her friend is a well known person (probably nobody you know) who we will keep anonymous for the time being. the reason he’s well known: he is one of the founders of a gay rights organization and is openly gay.

an the reason he didnt receive his alumni packet this year? baylor condemns his involvement in the gay rights movement, and as such, no longer recognizes him as an alumni.

so.. heres a guy who (outside of being gay) leads a great life… upstanding member of his community… financially well off… was an avid supporter of their med school, and happily continued to donate and contribute to the school. and in return, he is blacklisted for that one single segment of his life.

to say that this is fucking ridiculous is an understatement of mass proportion.

so… the fanboys have come out of the closet proclaiming the death of the iphone. hell… even verizons ads are taking shots directly at apple. so… whats all this crap about?

simply put… hardware specs. it has some of the best specs in the business. arguably, even better than the jesusphone iphone.

so… naturally, being new tech… i was interested. but no way im switching back to verizon (the people shouting from the rooftops about verizons “best network” are full of it. they have taken a big sip of the verizon cool-aid. i was with verizon for 3 years….. the coverage is a myth. they have the same shortcomings EVERY carrier does.)

so, i have a buddy that works as a regional rep for verizon… and he is CONSTANTLY showing me phones that are slated to be the next iphone killer. and all have failed. but today….guess what i was “privledged enough” (i write that with a small dose of laughing) to put my hands on today? thats right… the precious iphone slaying “droid”.

one word sums it up better than anything else i can think of, and this is a completely subjective take… all apple fanboyism aside……

FAIL.

and its for one simple reason: the keyboard is not only fucking horrendous… its just flat out unusable. if you have even medium sized hands, you will not be able to type AT ALL on this thing. within 5 seconds of use, i was already about to throw it through the wall. there is no forgiveness with the physical keyboard… it cant predict what you meant to type like a soft keyboard can. so immediately, well over 50% of the phone weight (and it IS heavy for a phone) and bulk are ruled out as garbage.

but… taking it further than that… ive heard all about “multitasking” and how great it is. yep… except, the droid doesnt truly multitask. it gives the impression that it does… meaning that background services can run, but as i was sitting there, my buddy got a call. i was browsing when the call came in. i hand him the phone to answer, and he denies the call and hands it back to me. my browser window = gone. it doesnt even remember what page i was viewing when i open it back up. how exactly is that multitasking?

the soft keyboard is decent…. but nowhere near as forgiving as the iphones. but, im sure with some getting used to… it might work. but then… if you are wanting this phone, its probably going to have a little to do with the physical keyboard.

verdict: its not going to make anyone jump ship from their current carrier the way the iphone has. no way. no how. if you are on verizon though, its worth a look. its the best smartphone they have. however, compared to the rest of their “smart”phone lineup… thats like being the fastest kid at the special olympics…. you’re still retarded.

but, thats just my opinion. feel free to tell me im wrong. (ps: you’re wrong).

so.. the issue: i have 6tb of internal storage to backup (right now… that may soon grow)… and needed to build something large enough to encompass it all with room to grow. at the same time… not cost me a fucking arm and two legs.

the goal: find something that would give me TONS of space (minimum 8tb, preferably expandable), for less than $1500.

so i started researching last week. i looked at a drobo first (as well as a drobo pro)… there are just too many issues that ive seen with it and time machine to be a viable option. as well, ive got a real hangup about using a proprietary system that only THEY can restore. no thanks. added to that… fw800 is the fastest thing available… and its just a no brainer… pass.

then i started looking at other external drives… the only other thing i could find in a ‘prebuilt’ solution was the lacie quadra (and quadra stack). it has a lot of pluses going for it… removable drives… no proprietary bullshit… simple, effective, and ready to go out of the box. the ONLY downside…. the price tag. to just get by with enough space, i would have to go with the 8tb 4big model… and the avg price on that thing online is around $1700. ouch. i would still have to buy an esata controller as well (or run it through fw800… which is ok, but moving that much data, its just not feasible)

so i decided i was going to have to build my own array. i started looking at all the options out there… external raid arrays in all shapes and sizes. the end result: a sans digital tr5m1 towerraid. there are bigger options out there (they have an 8 bay model) but most limit to 5 drives in the array, and more than that starts to put too much load on the controller anyway. but it fit my needs… 5 bays, esata, quiet, and hot swappable. its best feature… the pricetag. only $199 at frys. the only issue: the supplied controller is shit. it runs off of a sil3132 chipset that has spotty 64bit support, and ZERO snow leopard support. but, at $199, it was still a good deal, even without the controller.

so… i started looking around at the options for esata controllers. there were only two to choose from that stated explicitly they supported 64 bit, and more importantly, snow leopard. sonnet and highpoint. after looking at the specs and speed comparisons, i went with the highpoint rocketraid esata for mac. it works perfectly.

so… after all the components were decided upon, i went after my plan. purchased the sans digital 5 bay enclosure, the highpoint controller, and 5 x 2tb hard drives:
raid array, raid controller, and hard drives. (all links point to items at newegg)

grand total: $1,340.92

so i saved around $550 over the lacie option, and got an extra 2tb worth of storage in the process. and, should i need to in the future, i can duplicate this process using the same card, for right at $1k (giving me 20tb of storage).

it may not be the most “professional” solution… but it accomplished my needs, and did so WELL within the budget i wanted. mission accomplished.

this weekend… while you were all busy diddling yourselves, i was busy getting engaged.

told myself over a decade ago that it was going to take nothing short of a miracle to get me to ever take the plunge again… but, she’s cool. down to earth and rational. extremely intelligent (honors from baylor – the worst sports team school in the nation :happy) and has a sense of humor. we get along great… and she loves the boy (and vice-versa)…. so, its perfect.

no date set… probably going to be well off in the future (leaving it to her discretion). but, we’re happy that way. and no… none of you fuckers are invited.

ive got a few basic problems here.

this is entirely political. it is being run by republicans, covered in the news by republicans (fox), and promoted by republicans. party affiliation aside however….. why? why are they protesting? as its put by so many of their mouth pieces: “an outcry against big government and taxation”.

big government: so… the fact that this big government was been created over the last 8 years, and not in the last 10 weeks apparently means nothing. god forbid they should actually protest AS the problem is being created.

taxation: WHAT? taxes havent risen a single dime yet…. and unless these tea parties are being held at the local ritz country club or yacht club, i doubt any here will see a single dollar increase in the next 4 years either.

personally, i think this is all a guise. the basis for their protests just flat out dont fit. i think this is more of an issue about a democrat in office.
