Default DROOOOIIIIIDDDDDD............

this is not the droid you are looking for.

/stupid pun

so... the fanboys have come out of the closet proclaiming the death of the iphone. hell... even verizons ads are taking shots directly at apple. so... whats all this crap about?

simply put... hardware specs. it has some of the best specs in the business. arguably, even better than the jesusphone iphone.

so... naturally, being new tech... i was interested. but no way im switching back to verizon (the people shouting from the rooftops about verizons "best network" are full of it. they have taken a big sip of the verizon cool-aid. i was with verizon for 3 years..... the coverage is a myth. they have the same shortcomings EVERY carrier does.)

so, i have a buddy that works as a regional rep for verizon... and he is CONSTANTLY showing me phones that are slated to be the next iphone killer. and all have failed. but today....guess what i was "privledged enough" (i write that with a small dose of laughing) to put my hands on today? thats right... the precious iphone slaying "droid".

one word sums it up better than anything else i can think of, and this is a completely subjective take... all apple fanboyism aside......

FAIL.

and its for one simple reason: the keyboard is not only fucking horrendous... its just flat out unusable. if you have even medium sized hands, you will not be able to type AT ALL on this thing. within 5 seconds of use, i was already about to throw it through the wall. there is no forgiveness with the physical keyboard... it cant predict what you meant to type like a soft keyboard can. so immediately, well over 50% of the phone weight (and it IS heavy for a phone) and bulk are ruled out as garbage.

but... taking it further than that... ive heard all about "multitasking" and how great it is. yep... except, the droid doesnt truly multitask. it gives the impression that it does... meaning that background services can run, but as i was sitting there, my buddy got a call. i was browsing when the call came in. i hand him the phone to answer, and he denies the call and hands it back to me. my browser window = gone. it doesnt even remember what page i was viewing when i open it back up. how exactly is that multitasking?

the soft keyboard is decent.... but nowhere near as forgiving as the iphones. but, im sure with some getting used to... it might work. but then... if you are wanting this phone, its probably going to have a little to do with the physical keyboard.

verdict: its not going to make anyone jump ship from their current carrier the way the iphone has. no way. no how. if you are on verizon though, its worth a look. its the best smartphone they have. however, compared to the rest of their "smart"phone lineup... thats like being the fastest kid at the special olympics.... you're still retarded.

but, thats just my opinion. feel free to tell me im wrong. (ps: you're wrong).

I watched a few videos and skimmed some reviews. From the sounds of it the 5MP camera is all bragging rights, the pics it takes are shit. They were outside in the sun (i.e. the best environment for pictures) and 1 out of 5 shots was acceptable

It also looked like there was a lot of lag in the UI, for a phone as fast as it is I don’t get that. Why is it that the iPhone moves with you with 0 lag what is under your finger when you start moving stays under your finger… not so with these other phones, the Droid included.

As far as physical keyboards go, I think they are a waste of time. After using the iPhone for couple years it really feels like a step backward.

Hardware specs are only worth a damn if you have software that can take advantage of them

When the Pre came out I wanted to try it, I thought it looked cool. This thing doesn’t even make me want to go to the store to mess with it. Very lackluster

It’s Android 2.0. It’s 1 better. Although I’m not up on Android, I know they added turn by turn directions and some universal sync, but don’t know what else. Didn’t sound like anything ground breaking

well, there's a reason that I switched from Verizon to the iPhone. Anything billed as an "iPhone killer" is just hype to get people to look.

yea i saw AToS review of it and though its a good phone it does have the flaws esp, the keyboard, why the directional pad, when its a touchscreen. just stupid. take that out and make the keyboard bigger.

Sadly i guess i am still waiting on a decent phone from verizon.

In a year or so, hopefully you'll have access to the JesusPhone

Nothing will ever be an "iphone killer" iphone has a commanding lead in its market, i do feel that the droid will be a better phone, but it will not touch any of the marketshare that at&t has gained

Every touchscreen phone that comes out claims to be the “iPhone killer”. But never say never, no one stays on top forever

while i agree with this, look at the ipod, no other MP3 has been able to touch the ipod (no pun intended) in all these years.

i have no regrets about leaving Verizon for ATT yet and neither do the 20 people in my office who we have now rolled the iPhone out to.

Very true. Thought the iPod is starting to fade from importance and mp3 players in general now that phones are taking on that roll.

Phones will never go away though, at least not in the foreseeable future, their functionality is just going to increase. Will the iPhone and Apple still be on top in 20 years?

umm... no you dont.

verizon = cdma

the iphone is only built in a gsm model. so unless he ripped it apart, replaced the motherboard with one of his own making and a new cdma radio... hes full of shit.

you can unlock it to run on other gsm carriers (tmobile for example) but not cdma carriers (verizon)

I could swear he said it was running on Verizon - but my eyes just kinda glazed over at some point and I stopped listening. too much tech-talk and I get lost quickly.

I've been on Verizon for years, and have been pleased with the service and coverage - so I see no reason to switch just yet. An iPhone would be nice, but I don't really need one right now. I was thinking about the Droid, but would wait at least 6 months after it comes out to get one so the kinks would hopefully be worked out.

sounds like I just need to keep waiting till iPhone has a Verizon version. Oh well.

basically there is gsm and cdma. Verizon is using 3G on the cdma technology but once they go 4G they are ditching cdma and going on the gsm technology like at&t. so why would apple make a cdma iphone when all they have to do is wait and stick with their architecture.

like any carrier it depends on your area for coverage. Some of our VPs in my organization have noticed no service with their ATT iPhone in areas verizon always worked, but the thing is, they dont care because the benefits of the phone out way the coverage limitations, as slight as they may be. with the iphone, these people feel they are ALOT more productive then they ever were on any PDA before, and its worth the trade off to them. Maybe that will get old but for now, they are happy...
